Daegu Has Abundant Semiconductor Workforce
"Will Lead the Video IP Market"
Chips&Media, a semiconductor intellectual property (IP) specialist company led by CEO Kim Sang-hyun, plans to establish a Daegu Research Center at the Daegu Technopark Dongdaegu Campus in March, aiming to become a leading company in the comprehensive video IP market.
Chips&Media, listed on KOSDAQ, was founded in 2003 and is a fabless semiconductor IP company headquartered in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. The company develops video IP technologies such as video codecs and NPUs used for processing video data in automobiles and other fields, providing IP to over 150 domestic and international companies, thereby expanding its position as a global fabless company.
Since last year, Chips&Media has collaborated with Daegu City to build a network with local universities and has newly hired local talent. The newly hired local employees are currently undergoing training at the Seoul headquarters and will be assigned to the Daegu Research Center in the future to engage in research and development.
The main reason Chips&Media established a research center in Daegu, following Infineon Technologies Korea, Telechips, and Ideas2Silicon (I2S), is the abundance of semiconductor talent graduating from institutions such as Kyungpook National University and DGIST, providing a foundation for nurturing semiconductor professionals and corporate growth.
Daegu City has focused on building research and development infrastructure and establishing a step-by-step professional workforce training system to foster the semiconductor industry. Starting this year, the city plans to dedicate efforts to creating a fabless industry ecosystem, including the establishment of an intelligent semiconductor design support center.
Kim Sang-hyun, CEO of Chips&Media, stated, “Daegu City has excellent semiconductor talent graduating from Kyungpook National University and DGIST, as well as many demand companies in mobility and robotics industries. Based on this, we plan to accelerate our research and development projects and will continue to expand our business areas by hiring outstanding talent from Daegu.”
Choi Un-baek, Director of the Future Innovation Growth Office of Daegu City, said, “We expect Chips&Media to grow further as a semiconductor design specialist company by using the opening of the Daegu Research Center as a stepping stone. Daegu City will also strive to create an environment conducive to fabless companies settling in to revitalize the non-memory semiconductor industry, one of the city’s five future new industries.”
