Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Recruit 16,309 General Civil Servants and 24 Special Appointment Officials
Expanding Public Service Opportunities for Youth... Age Requirement for Grade 7 and Above Lowered from 20 to 18
A total of 16,333 new local government officials will be recruited across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. In particular, starting this year, the minimum age requirement for taking the local government official exam at grade 7 and above has been lowered to 18 to expand public service opportunities for young people.
On the 28th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced the 2024 local government official recruitment plan to select 16,309 general service officials and 24 special service officials.
The scale of this recruitment was decided through deliberations by personnel committees of each local government, reflecting the government's workforce efficiency policy and expected vacancies due to retirements and leaves of absence. Among them, general service officials include 621 at grade 7 and above, 13,087 at grades 8 and 9, 373 research and guidance positions, 2,207 fixed-term positions, and 21 professional career officials. By city and province, the selection numbers are 3,478 in Gyeonggi-do, 2,311 in Seoul, 1,523 in Gyeongbuk, 1,386 in Jeonnam, and 1,166 in Chungnam, among others. By job category, there are 5,278 administrative positions, 2,487 facility positions, 969 social welfare positions, and 480 tax positions.
12,423 will be hired through open competitive exams, and 3,910 through career competitive exams. Opportunities will also be provided to persons with disabilities, low-income individuals, and high school graduates (or expected graduates) to realize social integration and secure diversity within public service.
For persons with disabilities, separate recruitment will target the grade 7 and 9 exams, selecting 1,178 people (8.4%), which is higher than the legally mandated employment rate of 3.8%. For low-income groups, separate recruitment will target the grade 9 exam, selecting 471 people (4%), exceeding the legal employment rate of 2%. Graduates (or expected graduates) from specialized high schools such as technical high schools and Meister high schools will be selected through the grade 9 career competitive exam, with 258 positions available.
Especially from this year, to expand opportunities for youth to enter public service, the minimum age for taking the local government official exam at grade 7 and above has been lowered from 20 to 18, the same as for exams at grade 8 and below. Accordingly, those born on or before December 31, 2006, are eligible to apply.
The local government official written exams, held simultaneously nationwide this year, will take place on June 22 for grades 8 and 9, and on November 2 for grade 7. Deputy Minister Kim Min-jae stated, "Selecting outstanding local talents is very important to realize the local era," adding, "We will strive to provide higher quality administrative services to local residents by selecting competent talents through fair and transparent recruitment."
