Resisting Until the End to Survive Puma Attack
Wildlife Attacks on Pets Frequent in the US
A video of a large dog Schnauzer resisting until the very end and surviving a puma attack has become a sensation in the United States. Recently, ABC7 and KTLA reported on the puma attack that occurred around 9 p.m. on the 10th in the backyard of a house in La Verne, California. At the time, the Schnauzer, a pet of the household, was leisurely spending time alone in the backyard.
Suddenly, the puma jumped over the fence in front of the house and began attacking the Schnauzer. CCTV footage of the incident shows the puma quickly approaching the Schnauzer and attacking its neck. However, the Schnauzer did not remain passive in the face of the puma’s sudden assault. It struggled and resisted until the end, continuously pushing the puma away with its front paws. After a fierce struggle, the Schnauzer managed to break free from the puma and ran away.

The owners of the Schnauzer at the time did not realize the emergency situation. While the puma and Schnauzer were fighting in the backyard, they mistook the dog’s cries for sounds coming from the television, which was on. Nicole, the wife, said in a media interview, “When my husband asked, ‘Could that really be our Schnauzer?’ I replied, ‘It just sounds like something from the TV.’”
Puma Left the Scene After Failed Attack, Returned 20 Minutes Later
The Schnauzer that was attacked by the puma is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries. The wounds included abrasions and puncture wounds. Nicole said, “There were many puncture wounds, and some required stitches,” adding, “But with lots of attention, treats, and love, he is slowly recovering.” This incident attracted attention from various local broadcasters. Netizens commented, “The Schnauzer was lucky to survive. Usually, big cats target the jugular vein,” and “Pets cannot compete with wild animals. You must always be cautious when raising them.”
In fact, in California, wild animals such as pumas are known to frequently attack pets. In 2022, a Border Collie in Sonoma County barely survived a puma attack. In 2019, another Schnauzer was killed by a puma. The Schnauzer’s owner, a woman, was injured while trying to fend off the puma with her bare hands.
The puma left the scene after failing to attack but returned about 20 minutes later. Some experts suggest that the puma may have come back to finish off weakened prey. They also advised that if you encounter a puma, never run as it may trigger its attack instinct; instead, raise your arms above your head or make loud noises to appear more threatening. Additionally, they recommend never leaving children or pets alone and carrying them in strollers when going outside.
The Schnauzer has been bred as a farm dog in Germany since the late 1400s, known for catching rats, herding livestock, and guarding barns. Its name comes from the German word “Schnauze,” meaning muzzle. According to the Kennel Club, Giant Schnauzers typically have very good temperaments, displaying gentle dispositions and unwavering loyalty to their owners. They have well-developed senses, respond well to training, and possess strength, endurance, speed, and resistance to weather and disease. Their innate ability to withstand stimuli and confidence make them very suitable as companion dogs, sporting dogs, utility dogs, and working dogs.
