Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will conduct an intensive inspection of ‘safety risk factors around schools’ to create a safe school environment for students to commute with peace of mind as the new semester begins in March.

The inspection will focus on five main areas: ▲meal safety ▲illegal advertisements ▲traffic safety ▲illegal parking ▲pedestrian safety. In preparation for the upcoming school opening, the priority is ‘children’s safety’ to ensure that students can attend school safely and comfortably.

First, the district will carry out ‘hygiene guidance and inspection of meal facilities’ targeting 70 collective meal service locations in schools and kindergartens. This aims to prevent food poisoning incidents that may occur collectively due to rising spring temperatures and the new semester opening, ensuring safe meal provision.

Until March 15, the district, together with consumer hygiene monitors, will inspect ▲storage of expired food ▲hygiene management at each stage including ingredient storage, cooking, and serving ▲storage of preserved food ▲health checkups. Additionally, they urge adherence to personal hygiene management and preventive measures to prevent norovirus infections.

Next, to ensure pedestrian safety on school routes and a pleasant commute, the district will conduct a ‘mass cleanup of hazardous and illegal advertisements.’ A joint patrol team will immediately remove sidewalk signs, harmful advertisements, balloon signs, street vendors, and roadside clutter that threaten pedestrian safety.

Furthermore, the district will assign 14 ‘children’s commuting traffic safety instructors’ to eight schools. These instructors will accompany lower-grade elementary students who are vulnerable to traffic safety, protecting children safely from various crimes and traffic accidents during their commute.

In addition, the district will conduct a ‘special crackdown on illegal parking’ in child protection zones during school commuting hours. This aims to eradicate illegal parking that obstructs the visibility of children and drivers, which can cause traffic accidents and various safety incidents, thereby preventing accidents and creating a safe walking environment.

Finally, the district will carefully ensure pedestrian safety for children and guardians by replacing damaged sidewalk blocks, repairing uneven sidewalks, and lowering curb height differences.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, stated, “With the start of the new semester, we intend to proactively identify and address various risk factors across all areas to ensure the safe commute of children. We will continue to meticulously manage and create a safe and comfortable school environment where both children and parents can feel at ease.”
