"Protecting the People's Right to Life and Health is the State's Duty"
Prosecutor General Lee Won-seok urged medical personnel who left hospitals en masse in protest against the government's plan to increase the number of medical school students to "return to the field and protect the lives and health of the people" on the 27th.
On the afternoon of the same day, Lee met with reporters at the Suwon High Prosecutors' Office and District Prosecutors' Office in Gyeonggi Province and stated, "I believe it is the state's duty to protect the people's right to life and health."
He said, "All citizens, including patients and their families, are anxiously waiting for medical professionals to return to their side," adding, "If medical personnel stay by the patients' side, treat them, raise their voices within the medical community, and sufficiently present their opinions, the state will have no choice but to listen."
He also emphasized, "The Medical Service Act has procedures in place to prepare for such cases (hospital departures)," and added, "If these procedures are not followed, the prosecution will have no choice but to act according to the procedures stipulated in the Medical Service Act."
