February 'Price Rebound' Products See Surge in Sales... Additional Stock Secured
Emart will continue its newly introduced pricing policy of this year, the 'Price Breakthrough Declaration,' in March as well.
On the 28th, Emart announced that it will proactively select items among essential and seasonal ingredients whose prices have surged sharply and cause significant purchasing burdens for customers as Price Breakthrough Declaration products. They explained that this pricing was achieved through advance contract farming, bulk purchasing, and diversification of production areas.
First, the three core Price Breakthrough food items for March, consisting of popular foods, vegetables, and processed foods, were selected as eggs, spinach, and cup rice. Additionally, the lineup was expanded to include prepared foods by adding the popular whole chicken from the deli corner.
Basic ingredient eggs are sold at 4,980 KRW per tray of 30 eggs. This is about 33% cheaper than the current selling price of 7,380 KRW and 1,000 KRW lower than the previous promotional price of 5,980 KRW. To achieve this, Emart secured 1 million trays of promotional volume by managing the laying hen stocking schedule with partner farms about six months in advance. However, to provide benefits to many customers, purchases are limited to two trays per customer per day.
One bunch of spinach is sold at 1,980 KRW, half the previous selling price of 3,980 KRW. Spring spinach, rich in various nutrients, is one of the vegetables whose price has recently risen significantly. According to agricultural product distribution information, as of the 26th of this month, the retail price of 100g of spinach was 1,036 KRW, up 65.7% compared to the average price (625 KRW) and 24.9% compared to last year (829 KRW).
Furthermore, a representative dining-out menu, chicken, is offered as 'Two Whole Old-Fashioned Chickens (domestic origin chicken)' fried crispy in a market-style for 9,980 KRW. Amid rising dining-out prices, two chickens are prepared at a price under 10,000 KRW, and 500,000 units are limited for sale only in March through advance volume planning.
For processed foods, three types of CJ cup rice (seaweed soup rice, strong soybean paste barley bibimbap, Spam mayo rice bowl) are sold at 1,980 KRW each, discounted 50-56% from the regular price. The top-selling items among CJ cup rice’s main menus?rice bowls, bibimbap, and soup rice?were selected.
Meanwhile, the '40 processed food and daily necessities' essential shopping items sold at the lowest prices throughout the month replaced 20 items compared to last month. While maintaining the basic item categories, the products are adjusted monthly according to the season and trends so customers can purchase various manufacturers’ brands.
In the ramen category, Samyang Ramen and Jin Bibimmyun were selected as March Price Breakthrough products and are sold 10-30% cheaper than the existing selling price. In ready meals, CJ Bibigo Galbitang, Ottogi Beef Bone Soup, and Dongseo Post Granola Cranberry were newly added with discounts up to 44%. For daily necessities, Median Dual Infection toothbrush and Perio Cavity & Breath Care toothpaste are sold at 3,400 KRW each, 57% cheaper than the previous selling price.
The sales period for March Price Breakthrough products is from March 1 to 28.
February 'Price Breakthrough' Products Popular... Early Sell-Out and Additional Stock
Emart’s 'Price Breakthrough Declaration' products released in February, following January this year, also saw a significant increase in sales coinciding with the Lunar New Year holiday. In particular, the 'Price Backtrack' products launched on the 16th of last month sold 31% of the planned volume at Emart and Emart Everyday within just two weeks (February 16-26).
The 'Imjado Green Onion Beef Bulgogi' pack of 800g priced at 9,980 KRW sold 370,000 packs from the 2nd to the 26th. Emart analyzed that it was especially popular as it allowed families gathering for the Lunar New Year to easily prepare a main dish.
Onions were sold about 17% cheaper than the previous promotional price, resulting in a 21.9% increase in sales compared to the same period last year. The frozen dumplings 'Yalpi Packed Juicy Gyoza' saw sales increase about eightfold due to their affordable price in the 6,000 KRW range, ranking first in sales among dumpling category products.
Sales of the 40 processed food and daily necessities items also increased by 40.8%. Some items such as Sempio Soy Sauce 501, Ottogi 3-Minute Beef Jjajang/Curry, Chilsung Cider, 2070 Power Shield toothpaste, and Cody Kitchen Towels saw sales increase from three to nine times compared to the same period last year.
Emart emphasized that major distributors also joined Emart’s price cuts in February. According to Emart, over the past three weeks, online and offline distributors lowered prices on items such as Pulmuone Beef Stew Tofu, Crown Chamssal Seon/Sulbyeong, CJ Bibigo Beef Bone Soup, and Ottogi Mayonnaise, with some items’ prices rising again afterward.
The 54 Price Backtrack items launched on the 16th sold 31% of the prepared volume within about 10 days, becoming popular products at Emart and Emart Everyday. For example, 600,000 enoki mushrooms were initially planned, but 270,000 were sold in just three days, prompting an urgent increase in volume to 1.8 million. By the 26th of this month, 770,000 had been sold. CJ Hetbahn 4-pack also exceeded the prepared volume of about 25,000 units, with an additional 22,000 units secured and currently on sale.
Australian frozen brisket for grilling, Dongseo Post cup cereal, Orion Fresh Berry, Paldo Wang Ttukbaegi, Clio Vestige elastic ultra-fine toothbrush, and cleansing foam for pre-cleansing were also sold out 50-60% of the planned volume, prompting urgent volume negotiations with partners and additional production.
At Emart Everyday, 'bulk special price' products were also very popular. Emat Rice (10kg) ranked first in rice sales at Everyday, and fresh and processed foods such as cabbage, enoki mushrooms, Haenam Sansori seaweed, Baek Jong-won Bbaekuk Baek Ramen, Haitai Home Run Ball, and Haitai Yeonyanggaeng showed rapid sales.
