MOU Signed by 3 Organizations at District Office Planning Situation Room on Feb 27, 11 AM
Joining Forces to Achieve Climate Justice through Sustainable Carbon Neutrality and Smart City Implementation
Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul (Mayor Ilpyeong Lee) announced on the 27th that it has signed a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Net-Zero 2050 Climate Foundation and Seoul Digital Foundation to realize sustainable carbon neutrality and smart city implementation.
The signing ceremony held at the district office’s Planning Situation Room was attended by Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, Jang Daesik, Chairman of Net-Zero 2050 Climate Foundation, and Kang Yosik, Chairman of Seoul Digital Foundation. The three organizations joined hands to actively promote measures and practical programs to solve urban issues such as climate, environment, and energy, aiming to respond to the climate crisis and achieve sustainable development through carbon neutrality and smart city realization.
The ‘Net-Zero 2050 Climate Foundation’ is a non-profit organization under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs established in November 2020 to proactively respond to the climate change crisis and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through policy development and recommendations, as well as solidarity and cooperation with academia, research institutes, environmental groups, and civil society.
Founded in 2016, the ‘Seoul Digital Foundation’ is a Seoul Metropolitan Government-affiliated public institution that plays the role of a ‘digital think tank’ by implementing Digital Seoul to solve urban problems through digital technology utilization, software education, digital communication, and cultural dissemination.
The MOU includes ▲ cooperation in participation in practical actions related to climate, environment, and energy ▲ exchange of information and mutual cooperation for climate change response ▲ mutual cooperation in technologies such as ICT, environment, and urban management to solve various urban problems ▲ cooperation in regional joint projects for carbon neutrality and sustainable development ▲ cooperation to activate public interest activities through exchanges and cooperation among the organizations.
Through this agreement, Dongdaemun-gu expects to accelerate its transition and leap toward a carbon-neutral and smart city embodying the spirit of coexistence and future value.
Recognizing the severity of the climate crisis and the emergence of carbon neutrality as a core value determining urban competitiveness, the district declared the ‘2050 Carbon Neutral City Vision’ in February last year and has been intensifying efforts to implement carbon neutrality by fostering public consensus and discovering effective policies. In December last year, it was selected as a preliminary candidate site for the carbon-neutral city contest hosted by the Ministry of Environment and is making every effort to be chosen as the final target site.
Additionally, as the importance of efficient urban management to respond to rapidly changing future environments and revitalize the old city center increases, the district held a smart city proclamation ceremony in December last year and is carrying out various smart city implementation projects.
Ilpyeong Lee, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, said, “To advance as a sustainable carbon-neutral and smart leading city, it is essential to pool wisdom and strength through an organic cooperative system with specialized institutions,” adding, “I hope this agreement will serve as an opportunity to protect socially and economically vulnerable groups and create a happy and safe Dongdaemun-gu through the convergence of carbon neutrality and smart technology.”
