MWC 2024: Three Companies Pledge Technical Development Cooperation
AI Predicts and Adjusts Data Usage Increase
Ongoing Research on AI-Based Cloud Automation Technology
LG Uplus has pledged to develop technology that automatically adjusts 5G equipment capacity using artificial intelligence (AI) in collaboration with Samsung Electronics and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

On the 27th, LG Uplus announced at 'MWC 2024,' the world's largest mobile communications exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain, that it will cooperate with AWS and Samsung Electronics to develop an automation feature that optimizes the timing for expanding 5G equipment using AI.
The technology the three companies agreed to collaborate on is an automation technology designed to prepare for increases in data usage. Once commercialized, users will be able to utilize Samsung Electronics' cloud-native core software built on the AWS cloud to predict the optimal timing for equipment expansion with AI and automatically expand capacity to provide services. For example, if traffic surges during events like the New Year's countdown, AWS's AI will increase the 5G equipment capacity from 10GB to 20GB to provide uninterrupted service.
At the AWS booth inside the Fira Gran Via exhibition center in Barcelona, where MWC 2024 is held, the three companies demonstrated this technology. The 5G UPF from Samsung Electronics used in the demonstration is a cloud-native device applying container technology (a technology that allows communication equipment applications to run easily regardless of the system environment). The UPF is a core 5G network device that delivers data between terminals and the internet network, controls service speed, and generates billing information. Additionally, through AWS's AI and machine learning technology, it can predict sudden traffic increases and efficiently increase equipment capacity without customer inconvenience.
LG Uplus signed a business agreement with AWS in 2022 to develop network cloud technology and has been researching ways to build network equipment on the AWS cloud. It also completed a demonstration of a backup network configuration that enables stable network operation even in disaster situations such as earthquakes and fires by deploying Samsung Electronics' cloud-native 5G UPF equipment on AWS.
Following this demonstration, the three companies pledged to continue joint research on AI and machine learning-based cloud equipment automation technology.
Lee Sang-heon, Head of NW Advanced Development at LG Uplus, said, "Through this collaboration, by applying AWS's AI-based operation automation technology to Samsung Electronics' cloud-native core, we expect to provide optimal quality and stable services." He added, "We will continue to strengthen cooperation with technology-leading companies such as AWS and Samsung Electronics to secure competitiveness in next-generation network technologies using AI and cloud for customer experience innovation."
