Gyeonggi Fire Department 119 Ambulance Dispatched Every 37 Seconds Last Year

The Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters 119 ambulance team was dispatched once every 37 seconds last year. Although the number of dispatches slightly decreased compared to the previous year, the number of transports and transported individuals increased.

According to the "2023 Gyeonggi-do Ambulance Activity Statistical Analysis" released by the Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 27th, the Gyeonggi Fire 119 ambulance team recorded 846,565 dispatches, 476,444 transports, and 481,448 transported individuals last year. Converted into time, this means one dispatch every 37 seconds, one transport every 1 minute and 6 seconds, and one person transported every 1 minute and 6 seconds.

Looking at the types of transported patients, 772,734 cases were due to diseases, and 153,162 cases were non-disease related (overlapping counts).

Among disease patients, hypertension was the most common with 159,573 cases, accounting for 20.6%. This was followed by ▲diabetes with 95,157 cases (12.3%) ▲cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases with 75,225 cases (9.7%) ▲cancer with 33,719 cases (4.4%). Among non-disease cases, accident injuries were the most frequent with 93,804 cases (61.2%), followed by traffic accidents with 40,733 cases (26.6%).

Compared to the previous year, disease patients increased by 6.5%, and non-disease patients increased by 6%. This is analyzed to be due to population aging and an increase in leisure and outdoor activities after COVID-19, leading to more accident injury patients.

In particular, the four major severe patient groups?cardiac arrest, severe trauma, cardiovascular, and cerebrovascular diseases?numbered 107,887, a 12.9% increase compared to the previous year (95,569).

The number of dispatches by the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters 119 ambulance team last year accounted for 24.3% of the nationwide dispatches (3,486,522), overwhelmingly surpassing Seoul's 609,643 dispatches (17.5%) to rank highest nationwide.

Cho Sungho, head of the Gyeonggi-do Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, "Although the population of Gyeonggi-do has increased by 9.6% over the past 10 years, the number of ambulance dispatches and transported individuals has explosively increased by 37.2% and 22.2%, respectively, recording the highest nationwide. We will seek ways to improve emergency treatment for diabetes and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases due to the aging population, and improve the working conditions of ambulance personnel to provide high-quality ambulance services to the residents."
