Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) has taken the lead in creating public parking lots by utilizing idle land within the area to alleviate parking difficulties and improve the parking environment.

On the 26th, the district signed an agreement with the Seoul Headquarters of Korea Electric Power Corporation (Head: Jeon Si-sik) to use the development site of the Samgakji Substation as a temporary public parking lot.

Through this agreement, a 200-space open parking lot (self-parking off-street parking lot) will be created on the 8,626㎡ development site after work such as ▲land leveling ▲installation of security lights and fences ▲parking space painting ▲installation of parking facilities.

The area around 231-30 Hangang-ro 1-ga, where the site is located, is a seriously congested parking area in Samgakji 'Yongridan-gil,' a popular hot place among the MZ generation. As the number of visitors to the commercial district increases, concerns about pedestrian safety and vehicle traffic problems caused by illegal parking are growing.

Also, the resident-priority parking zones on the side roads used by residents of nearby multi-family houses and villas are already saturated. Conflicts among residents due to illegal parking caused by a lack of parking spaces are intensifying, and frequent requests for crackdowns are wasting administrative resources.

Accordingly, the district identified idle land near Yongridan-gil and, after several discussions with the landowner, Korea Electric Power Corporation Seoul Headquarters, signed an agreement to use the planned development site as a temporary public parking lot without separate land acquisition.

This agreement was promoted by forming a mutual consensus on creating a temporary public parking lot using the development site, empathizing with the difficulties of local residents suffering from a lack of parking spaces.

The agreement period is three years from March 1, with an extension of one year each annually until the land is sold or development projects commence.

The district plans to swiftly proceed with the project and create a public parking lot with a total of 200 spaces by December this year. Afterward, the overall management of the public parking lot will be entrusted to the Yongsan-gu Facilities Management Corporation.

In particular, although it is a temporary public parking lot, safety facilities such as security CCTV and security lights will be thoroughly installed to ensure residents can use it with peace of mind. When the agreement period ends, these safety facilities will be relocated to other public parking lots and installed as government-supplied materials that can be recycled, thereby also striving to reduce costs.

Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “With this valuable agreement, we have secured pedestrian safety and prepared a large-scale parking space, so we will establish and operate the public parking lot promptly.” He added, “We will continue to seek various solutions to alleviate parking difficulties by utilizing idle land or leftover spaces within the region.”
