20s Illegally Filming with Phone in Jjimjilbang Bathroom
Victim Woman Waited Outside and Caught Him Herself
A woman directly caught a man who was illegally filming in a jjimjilbang restroom and handed him over to the police. On the 27th, Yonhap News TV reported, "At around 3:30 a.m. on the 19th, a man in his 20s, Mr. A, was caught by a female victim while secretly filming with a hidden camera at a jjimjilbang in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul." The victim, Ms. Kim, grabbed Mr. A by the collar and shouted, "Please report him."
According to the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident and a video recorded by Ms. Kim herself, she waited outside after using the restroom for Mr. A to come out. Shortly after, when she saw Mr. A coming out of the women's restroom, Ms. Kim shouted, "Why are you coming out of here? You bastard, come here," and grabbed him by the collar. She then took his phone and called for help nearby.
The victim, Ms. Kim, reportedly became suspicious after noticing a phone placed on top of the partition while using the restroom and waited for Mr. A. She said, "A black object was flickering, reflected by the ventilation fan on the ceiling. I was watching without thinking, and then a phone went in and out of the stall I was in. I started recording (video) from then on to keep evidence."
She also said, "At first, I thought he was a minor," and added, "After grabbing his collar so he couldn't escape, I asked a jjimjilbang user who was awake to call 112. I was holding his collar with one hand and had taken his phone with the other, so I couldn't use both hands." However, Mr. A denied the charges, saying, "I didn't do it," and Ms. Kim shouted, "This man was filming secretly in the restroom." The situation was settled when the police arrived at the jjimjilbang 10 minutes later.
After being caught by the police, Mr. A initially denied the crime but later confessed after his phone was confiscated. It was found that he had been scouting for victims at the jjimjilbang during the early morning hours. Mr. A was arrested on charges of violating the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes, etc. (filming using a camera), and the police are investigating whether there are additional victims.
The victim, Ms. Kim, who directly handed Mr. A over to the police, said, "I hope others do not act like me if the same thing happens to them," and added, "Fortunately, the perpetrator was clumsy, but if anyone experiences the same thing, ask someone nearby for help."
