[MWC On-site] Samsung, Nvidia, and Others Form 'AI LAN Alliance'

NVIDIA, Nokia, and Others Accelerate 6G Technology Development

Samsung Electronics is taking the lead in next-generation communication technology, 6G, through artificial intelligence (AI).

On the 26th, Samsung Electronics announced that it will participate as a founding member of the AI RAN (Radio Access Network) Alliance, aiming to research 6G technology and foster its ecosystem.

[MWC On-site] Samsung, Nvidia, and Others Form 'AI LAN Alliance'

The 'AI RAN Alliance,' officially launched at 'MWC 2024' held in Barcelona, Spain on the 26th, consists of 10 telecommunications and software companies including Samsung Electronics, NVIDIA, Arm, SoftBank, Ericsson, Nokia, Microsoft, and one university, Northeastern University in the United States, as founding members.

Samsung Electronics plans to lead 6G research and ecosystem expansion by applying AI to wireless communication technology to drive service innovation and enhance network efficiency.

The AI RAN Alliance has formed three working groups: 'AI for RAN,' 'AI and RAN,' and 'AI on RAN.' ▲The AI for RAN working group will research wireless communication optimization technologies using AI and machine learning to improve frequency, cost, and energy efficiency ▲The AI and RAN working group will focus on AI and wireless network convergence technologies for efficient resource management and maximizing infrastructure utilization ▲The AI on RAN working group will concentrate on discovering new AI applications and services in wireless networks and advancing related technology research.

The research outputs such as technical reports and white papers derived from these activities are expected to significantly contribute to the discovery of new services, technical requirements, standards, and commercialization of 6G in the future.

Charlie Jang, Senior Vice President and Head of the 6G Research Team at Samsung Research, stated, "We expect to create new changes centered on AI and 6G networks, innovating the way people interact with technology and creating new value."

Meanwhile, to prepare for 6G, Samsung Electronics established the Next-Generation Communication Research Center under Samsung Research in May 2019 to study advanced technologies for next-generation communication. It published the 6G white paper in July 2020 and the 6G frequency white paper in May 2022.
