Yeongdeungpo-gu Seonyudo Library Transformed into a Cultural Complex Space 4th Floor General Reference Room

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced on the 27th that Seonyudo Library has completed a 10-month renovation and will reopen as a new complex cultural facility where communication, sharing, and creation are possible for residents.

Seonyudo Library, which opened 15 years ago, was in urgent need of a full renovation due to aging facilities and the lack of dedicated spaces for programs or youth.

Accordingly, since last year, the district has been remodeling the library to break the existing notion of a library as merely a space for books, transforming it into a complex cultural space where communication, experience, and creation are possible. Instead of a rigid library, the plan is to create spaces for creation and hobbies, cultural enjoyment, and growth for residents.

Seonyudo Library, consisting of floors 1 through 5 above ground, has been remodeled to emphasize the identity of each floor. The first floor has been opened up by removing walls between the information desk, children's materials room, and exhibition/experience spaces. This allows for natural interaction among books, play, and meetings, enabling visitors to enjoy reading and relaxation together.

The 2nd and 3rd floors feature the highlight of Seonyudo Library: ‘Sairo,’ an emotional recharging space for the twin generation (5th grade elementary to 3rd grade middle school students). The Seed Foundation of the Book Culture Foundation invested 1 billion KRW to create this space, which is the sixth of its kind nationwide and the first in Seoul.

‘Sairo’ is designed with various spaces where children can experience new things and explore freely. It includes a Making Zone where children can realize their imaginations using prepared materials, a Story Zone for making books, a Confectionery Baking Zone, and a Pyeongsang Zone with comfortable sofas for watching comics or movies.

The 4th floor’s general materials room includes a ‘Keyword Exhibition Corner’ where imagination can be freely expressed and a ‘Passive Corner’ for self-directed creation. The 5th floor houses a multi-content zone, gallery, relaxation space, and community area, making Seonyudo Library a hub for culture and arts in daily life.

In addition, to celebrate the reopening, the district has prepared various special programs such as performance-style book talks for children, picture book exhibitions, interactive exhibitions, and author invitation lectures.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Through the remodeling of Seonyudo Library, we expect the library, which was once a place for studying and quietness, to transform into a space for creation, communication, and cultural enjoyment. We will continue to prepare diverse reading culture programs so that libraries can add happiness to the lives of our residents.”
