March 4-15: Ensuring Safety of School Routes in 33 Elementary School Child Protection Zones During Arrival and Dismissal Times
Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will conduct intensive crackdowns on illegally parked vehicles in school zones at 33 elementary schools for 10 days from March 4 to 15, coinciding with the new school semester.
Illegal parking in school zones is a major cause of children's traffic accidents. To ensure safety on school routes, the district will focus enforcement during school hours (8-9 a.m. and 1-4 p.m.) within this period.
To this end, enforcement teams will be organized with two teams in the morning and three in the afternoon, conducting joint operations with Gangnam and Suseo Police Stations. Additionally, fixed CCTV cameras installed in school zones, totaling 144 units, will be used for monitoring.
Vehicles parked in school zones that do not move within 5 minutes will be subject to enforcement.
The fines for this are 120,000 KRW for passenger cars and 130,000 KRW for vans, which is 2 to 3 times higher than on general roads. To prevent illegal parking in advance, the district operates a pre-notification service that sends text messages to drivers informing them that the area is monitored by fixed CCTV. Applications for this service can be made on the district office website under the category Road Traffic Parking Illegal Parking Enforcement Notification Service.
Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, stated, “We are mobilizing all administrative efforts, including cracking down on illegally parked vehicles, sidewalk construction, and installation of traffic safety facilities, to create safe school routes. Going forward, based on the awareness that adults must protect school zones so children can attend school safely, we will foster a proper parking culture.”
