'City of Flowers' Dongdaemun-gu Gardeners 2nd Cohort in Training

‘City of Flowers’ Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) is training the 2nd class of gardeners.

The district started the ‘Gardener Training Course’ last year to create a gardening culture together with its residents.

For this year’s 2nd gardener course, 20 residents were finally selected after overcoming a 4:1 competition ratio, and the first class began on the 8th.

The education consists of theory and field practice; the ‘theory’ takes place at the Dongdaemun Youth Reading Room, and the ‘field practice’ after the theory education is conducted at the green facility space located in Jeonnong-dong.

Both theory and practice cover tree species suitable for Dongdaemun-gu’s public gardens, construction methods, and overall maintenance, and are conducted as participant-tailored experiential classes focused on field practice over 12 weeks in each of the first and second halves of the year.

Gardeners who complete the basic education will perform volunteer activities managing gardens established throughout the district and will directly participate in the management of local parks.

The 1st class of Dongdaemun-gu gardeners, after completing the basic education, contributed to the beautiful and pleasant management of flowers and trees in public gardens, starting with caring for roses at the Jungnangcheon Rose Garden, and creating the Happy Garden at Bookmajoong within the Flowerbed of Knowledge (on the site of Seoul Metropolitan Library).
