Yeongdeungpo-gu, On-site Inspection of Aerial Survey Interpretation... 5,610 Suspected Illegal Buildings

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will conduct on-site inspections until June to accurately verify violations of the Building Act on suspected illegal buildings.

According to the results of aerial photo analysis conducted last year, the district stated that it will check for violations of relevant regulations on 5,610 buildings identified as inspection targets. The number of buildings subject to inspection this year increased by 9% compared to the previous year.

The district plans to prevent safety accidents and casualties caused by illegal buildings through this on-site inspection, raise awareness about indiscriminate construction activities, and create a pleasant urban environment.

The key inspection items include ▲ unauthorized extensions of auxiliary buildings such as rooftops, balconies, and storage rooms ▲ unauthorized construction of temporary buildings such as containers ▲ verification of business space extensions using prefabricated tents or panels, all of which apply if permits or reports under the Building Act have not been submitted.

If a building is confirmed to be in violation as a result of the inspection, administrative actions such as prosecution and imposition of enforcement fines will be taken according to relevant laws. Additionally, if the building is later marked as a ‘violation building’ in the building register, it may face various disadvantages such as restrictions on permits and approvals. However, the district emphasized that the purpose of this inspection is to prevent safety accidents, and after the on-site inspection, it will prioritize sufficient guidance and administrative support to allow voluntary correction such as partial demolition or post-approval of violations.

Furthermore, the district is actively promoting the inspection by distributing advance notices to building owners about the on-site visits, installing banners related to the inspection, and conducting public awareness campaigns for residents.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “Safety accidents can be sufficiently prevented through thorough management and prior measures,” and added, “We will do our best to create a safe and livable Yeongdeungpo through fair and accurate inspections and maintenance.”
