Compensation Eligibility Expanded from 1,000 to 6,600 People This Year... Personal and Property Damage Compensation Each 10 Million KRW
Up to 1 Million KRW for Traffic Accident Injuries to Children Under 12 While Walking, Even Outside School Zones
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) operates a citizen safety insurance to protect residents who suffer injuries from various accidents and disasters in daily life. This year, the total coverage limit has been significantly expanded to allow more residents to receive compensation for their losses.
The citizen safety insurance is a system fully funded by Mapo-gu that provides compensation of up to 300,000 KRW per person for physical damage caused by domestic injury accidents, separate from personal insurance.
All residents registered in Mapo-gu are automatically enrolled without any separate subscription procedures, and registered foreigners and overseas Koreans with domicile registration are also covered.
Emergency expenses, treatment, surgery, X-ray examinations, hospitalization fees, etc. caused by injury accidents are covered on an actual expense basis up to 300,000 KRW per person (funeral expenses up to 10 million KRW) with a deductible of 30,000 KRW per claim, and overlapping payments with personal indemnity insurance are possible.
In particular, unlike last year when medical expenses for injuries were covered within a limit of 300 million KRW, this year the total coverage limit has increased to 2 billion KRW, significantly raising the number of eligible beneficiaries from 1,000 to 6,600.
Additionally, coverage for children under 12 has been strengthened, providing up to an additional 1 million KRW based on injury severity if a child is injured in a traffic accident while walking, even outside of school zones.
Starting this year, Mapo-gu also offers liability coverage up to 10 million KRW for legal bodily injury and property damage claims against third parties, further enhancing support for residents affected by damages.
The newly expanded insurance period runs from February 22, 2023, to February 21, 2025. If the resident is registered in Mapo-gu on the day of the accident, insurance claims can be filed within three years from the date of the incident. However, some cases such as traffic accidents, industrial accidents, medical expenses covered by the National Health Insurance Service, non-reimbursable items, diseases, and infectious diseases are excluded from insurance payments.
Residents wishing to apply can consult at the Mapo-gu Citizen Safety Insurance Reception Center, and insurance claims should be filed directly with the insurance company by the insured or beneficiary.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We hope that the Mapo-gu citizen safety insurance can provide some help to residents facing difficulties due to unexpected accidents in daily life,” and added, “Prior to this, Mapo-gu will continue to focus on creating a safe local environment 365 days a year to prevent safety accidents.”
