Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do is accelerating efforts to create a culture of happy coexistence between people and animals.

On the 22nd, Damyang-gun announced that it is preparing a support project for companion and abandoned animals, which is a major concern in the local community, as a designated donation project where donors specify the purpose and project under the Hometown Love Donation System, in line with the era of 15 million companion animals.

In 2022, the county introduced the concept of animal welfare through the "Damyang-gun Ordinance on Animal Protection and Welfare" for harmonious coexistence between people and animals. It also opened the nation's first public clinic capable of systematically diagnosing and treating abandoned and stray animals.

The public clinic provides free support for vaccinations, neutering surgeries, and other services to reduce the economic burden of adopting abandoned animals, and is also promoting an adoption cost support project that covers insurance and other expenses incurred during animal adoption.

Additionally, by achieving first place in fundraising through the Hometown Love Donation System last year, the county has been steadily loved by offering pet snacks as return gifts to the related population secured. Volunteers at the abandoned animal adoption center, including Archbishop Kim Hee-jung of the Catholic Church and about 30 others, deliver hometown love donations, uniting everyone in realizing animal welfare.

Archbishop Kim Hee-jung, who has served as the head of the Gwangju Archdiocese for over 12 years, also adopted three dogs through the adoption center.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to improve awareness of abandoned animals by holding photo exhibitions featuring the abandoned dogs protected by the county, and preparations are underway to build an animal protection center that consolidates dispersed animal protection facilities such as public clinics for companion and abandoned animals, healing centers for abandoned animals, and adoption centers.

County Governor Lee Byung-no said, “Companion animals are recognized as indispensable family members in our lives, and efforts to improve the level of animal welfare are very important,” adding, “We will do our best to create a culture of happy coexistence between people and animals.”

Meanwhile, Damyang-gun is selecting and promoting donation projects such as “Hospital accompaniment and integrated care for elderly with mobility difficulties,” “Support projects for local children's centers to make Damyang a better place for children,” and “Support projects to revitalize the Damyang-eup merchant community,” so that donors who have conveyed their love can feel rewarded.

In addition, to discover additional designated donation projects involving donors, the county plans to hold an idea contest for designated donation projects and actively promote it on the county website and social media.
