HMM Accelerates Eco-Friendly Efforts... International Organizations Raise Evaluation Ratings

CDP Rating Upgraded from B to A-
Selected as 'Best Eco-Friendly Shipping Company' at Green Shipping Summit Awards

HMM received an excellent evaluation for its response to climate change from an international sustainability management assessment organization. While its rating was upgraded to a higher level compared to before, it was also selected as the best eco-friendly shipping company in another evaluation. This shows a rapid response amid the global shipping alliance restructuring under the name of eco-friendliness.

On the 21st, HMM announced that it had obtained the 'Leadership (A-)' rating in the climate change response category from the UK sustainability management assessment organization CDP. CDP is an international global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiative related to the environment, led by more than 700 financial investment institutions worldwide, with about 23,000 companies participating. Other ESG assessment organizations such as EcoVadis and S&P also reflect CDP results.

HMM first participated in the evaluation in 2010 and rose to an A- rating after nine years since obtaining a B rating in 2014. This is said to be significantly higher than the maritime transport sector average of B- and the global average of C.

In particular, HMM received the highest grade of A in the evaluation category of climate change response strategy and financial impact analysis. It also received an A- for establishing greenhouse gas reduction targets and calculating and reporting indirect emissions (Scope 3).

Meanwhile, last month, HMM was selected as the 'Best Eco-Friendly Shipping Company' at the Green Shipping Summit Awards. The Green Shipping Summit Awards are selected through online voting and industry experts' evaluations for shipping companies, terminals, equipment suppliers, and associations that contributed to greenhouse gas reduction.

HMM was highly evaluated for developing a 'Supply Chain Carbon Calculator' that calculates carbon emissions generated during cargo transportation and actively promoting the introduction of alternative fuels such as 'bio ship fuel.'

HMM is accelerating eco-friendliness because it is an unstoppable trend. Previously, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) announced a goal to achieve zero carbon dioxide emissions from ships by 2050. Accordingly, domestic and international shipping companies are replacing their fleets with eco-friendly ships. Maersk, the world's second-largest shipping company, also announced an alliance with Germany's Hapag-Lloyd after parting ways with the number one MSC, stating that a significant number of jointly operated ships will be operated using eco-friendly fuels. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd also set goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040 and 2045, respectively, earlier than the IMO deadline.

An HMM official explained, "We are conducting various research and development for carbon neutrality, including the introduction of eco-friendly ships and carbon capture demonstrations," adding, "We are actively responding to global eco-friendly regulations and securing future competitiveness."
