12 Areas Designated as Intensive Crackdown Zones
On the 21st, Daegu City designated concentrated crackdown zones for illegal overnight parking of commercial cargo trucks and will begin enforcement against illegal overnight parking, which had been relaxed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and other infectious diseases.
As illegal overnight parking of commercial cargo trucks threatened citizens' traffic safety, the city set concentrated crackdown zones for illegal overnight parking of commercial cargo trucks by district and county, and will conduct intensive enforcement for two weeks from February 26 to March 8.
According to the Cargo Truck Transportation Business Act, overnight parking is defined as parking for more than one hour on residential roads outside designated garages between midnight and 4 a.m. In 2023, a total of 817 cases of illegal overnight parking were detected and subject to guidance and administrative measures, but citizens still experience inconvenience due to illegal overnight parking near schools and densely populated residential areas.
Daegu City has designated 12 concentrated crackdown zones for illegal overnight parking of commercial cargo trucks, mainly around schools and densely populated residential areas by district and county. Business owners caught illegally overnight parking in these zones will face business suspension for 5 days or fines ranging from 100,000 to 200,000 KRW.
As of December 31, 2023, the number of licensed commercial cargo trucks registered in Daegu City is 22,381, of which 13,784 are over 1.5 tons and subject to mandatory garage installation. Among these, 6,250 trucks have garages in Daegu, while 7,534 have garages in nearby areas such as Gyeongsan and Goryeong.
Currently, to secure public garages for commercial cargo trucks, Buk-gu and Dalseong-gun are constructing public garages near Chilgok IC with 477 spaces and near Hwawon Okpo IC with 612 spaces, respectively, scheduled for completion in 2025.
Kim Daeyoung, Director of the Daegu City Transportation Bureau, stated, “We will strengthen continuous enforcement against illegal overnight parking, including concentrated crackdowns in designated zones, and do our best to resolve complaints caused by illegal parking and ensure citizens' traffic safety through early commencement of the currently under-construction public garages.”
