Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 20th that it will conduct special crackdowns on drunk driving in the Incheon island areas such as Baengnyeong and Daecheong starting from the 22nd.
The police launched the special crackdown after 65 cases of drunk driving were detected on Incheon islands last year, and recently a fatal drunk driving accident occurred on Baengnyeong Island.
On the 11th during the Lunar New Year holiday, around 10 p.m., a man in his 50s, Mr. A, was driving a passenger car under the influence of alcohol and hit Mr. B, in his 60s, causing his death. At the time, Mr. B was trapped under the vehicle and unconscious, and was transported to the hospital but ultimately passed away. The police who arrived at the scene measured Mr. A’s blood alcohol concentration at 0.05%, the legal limit for license suspension.
The police will conduct continuous drunk driving crackdowns regardless of location or time at local police stations, and once a month, they will deploy police motorcycles to carry out simultaneous drunk driving checks.
During the morning rush hour, they will crack down on so-called “hangover driving” around military bases and other areas. After lunchtime, they will focus on “drinking with meals” drunk driving in areas dense with restaurants and ferry terminals. In the evening, they plan to intensively crack down on “drunk driving after nightlife” in entertainment districts.
To prevent anyone from avoiding the crackdown by simply avoiding specific times or places, the police will frequently change locations in short intervals. Additionally, during 112 patrols, if they spot vehicles swaying or with headlights off?signs of suspected drunk driving?they will actively conduct inspections and crackdowns.
Furthermore, the police will use village hall announcement broadcasts to inform residents about the dangers of drunk driving and the strengthened crackdowns, and will also provide drunk driving prevention education targeting military bases.
An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency emphasized, “Drunk driving is a serious crime that causes great harm not only to oneself but also to the lives, bodies, and property of others,” adding, “Not only residents living in island areas but also tourists must never engage in drunk driving.”
