Replacement of 5 Non-Standing Members of the National Police Commission... Official Term Starts on the 20th

All non-standing members of the National Police Commission, a collegial body that deliberates and decides on major police security policies, have been replaced.


According to the National Police Agency on the 19th, the government recently finalized the successors of the five non-standing members of the 11th National Police Commission whose terms expired on December 14 last year.

The five new non-standing members are Kim Seong-eun, professor at Kyung Hee University Graduate School; Park Hyeong-myeong, lawyer at Kim & Chang Law Firm; Lee Hyo-won, professor at Seoul National University Law School; Kim Se-dong, editorial writer at Munhwa Ilbo; and Jo Jeong, head of SBS News Headquarters.


They will receive their appointment letters from Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min at the Government Complex Seoul on the morning of the 20th, and then attend the 531st National Police Commission meeting held in the afternoon to begin their official three-year terms.


The National Police Commission was established in 1991 under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as a collegial deliberative and decision-making body to ensure the political neutrality, democracy, and fairness of the police. Its main duties include deliberation and decision-making on security policies, recommendation and consent for the appointment of the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency, and nomination of members for the provincial autonomous police commissions.


The commission consists of a total of seven members including the chairperson, with six non-standing members including the chairperson. Members are appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the Minister of the Interior and Safety and approval by the Prime Minister. The term is three years with no possibility of reappointment.


Meanwhile, Chairperson Kim Ho-cheol (lawyer, 20th Judicial Research and Training Institute) and full-time member Park Gyeong-min (former Commissioner General of the Korea Coast Guard, 1st class of the Korean National Police University), who hold political vice-ministerial positions, will have their terms end on August 19.
