'Drunk Driving' Caught Red-Handed by Smart Control System

Osan-si, Detected by Intelligent CCTV Selective Monitoring
Cooperation with Police Station Situation Room... Arrested in 20 Minutes

"That vehicle looks suspicious...." At 1 a.m. on the 16th, a suspicious vehicle was captured on the real-time selective monitoring system of the CCTV at the 'Osan-si Smart City Integrated Operation Center' located in Sucheong-dong, Osan-si. It showed a vehicle suspected of drunk driving hitting a parked car and fleeing the scene.

Subsequently, the center tracked the vehicle's movement in real time through CCTV and, in cooperation with the Osan Police Station 112 Situation Room, apprehended the drunk driver within 20 minutes. Earlier, on the 14th, the center had also detected a drunk driving vehicle using this system.

The CCTV real-time selective monitoring system at the Osan-si Smart City Integrated Operation Center is proving to be highly effective in detecting crimes such as drunk driving.

According to Osan-si on the 19th, there are a total of 2,366 CCTVs installed throughout the city. These CCTVs do not merely transmit real-time footage but also detect abnormal behaviors such as those of pedestrians and send warning messages to the monitoring center.

Based on this, monitoring personnel assess and track criminal activities or citizen risks and notify the police or 119 emergency medical services. The two cases of drunk driving detected by the center were instances where the CCTV captured the swaying movements of the drivers.

An official from the Osan-si Smart Traffic Safety Division explained, "Currently, 16 monitoring personnel work in four shifts at the monitoring center," adding, "While there are limits to monitoring all CCTVs in real time, intelligent CCTV is a great help."

The center is making efforts to ensure citizens' safety and convenience through ▲the establishment of an intelligent CCTV selective monitoring system ▲deployment of specialized monitoring public officials ▲and close cooperation with related agencies such as police stations and fire stations for 24-hour real-time disaster situation transmission and rapid disaster response.

Last year alone, the center provided 2,144 instances of CCTV video information to related agencies, offering crucial clues for the capture of major criminals such as drunk drivers and car thieves. Especially, the center plans to invest 500 million KRW in special grants secured from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety last year to build intelligent crime prevention CCTVs equipped with crowd management systems at 11 locations within the jurisdiction this year.

Osan Mayor Ikwon Jae said, "We will expand the smart monitoring system to eliminate blind spots in crime and create the nation's safest city that protects citizens' lives and property."
