The Rugged Terrain and Strange Rock Formations of Goheung Palyongsan
Palyongsan, which offers a panoramic view of the Dadohae and the mountains and fields of Goheung, is designated as a scenic site. The Cultural Heritage Administration announced on the 19th that it will finalize the designation after collecting opinions from various sectors for a month and undergoing a review by the Cultural Heritage Committee.
It consists of eight peaks lined up like a folding screen. Yuyeongbong (491m), Seongjubong (538m), Saenghwangbong (564m), Sajabong (578m), Orobong (579m), Duryubong (596m), Chilseongbong (598m), and Jeokchwibong (608m) rise in a straight line facing south. Each mountain is rugged and features many bizarre rock formations.
Palyongsan is a spectacular view when seen up close and an illusionary scene when viewed from afar. From the summit of each peak, the beautiful and faint scenery of the Dadohae comes into full view. Goheung-gun explained, "The islands unique to Goheung Bay, formed in winding curves, and the jagged coastline tell the joys and sorrows, and the cycle of life and death of our lives like a mirage."
Palyongsan was upgraded from a provincial park to a national park in January 2011. It is included among the top 100 famous mountains nationwide due to its majestic sunrises and rocky hiking trails, attracting continuous visits from hikers. The natural forest dominated by oak species such as Mongolian oak, sawtooth oak, and Korean maple, as well as Neunggasa Temple, founded by Ado Hwasang during the reign of King Nulji of Silla (419), are also must-see attractions.
