7-inch Foldable Panel Target Test
First Case of Obtaining US Military Spec
Samsung Display's foldable panel has overcome harsh conditions such as extreme temperature changes and shocks, passing the U.S. Department of Defense durability standard test to earn the 'Mil-Spec (Military Specification).' Samsung Display is the first to acquire Mil-Spec certification for a foldable panel.

On the 19th, Samsung Display announced that its 7-inch foldable panel, used in the latest foldable smartphones, passed the U.S. Department of Defense military standard 'MIL-STD 810G' test, confirming the product's strong durability.
This standard, commonly referred to as Mil-Spec, is used as a benchmark to evaluate whether a product operates normally without damage under extreme usage environments and stressful conditions.
To verify the durability of its 7-inch foldable panel, Samsung Display commissioned UL Solutions, a global organization specializing in applied safety science, to conduct four test items related to temperature and shock that may be encountered during daily and outdoor activities, among various items in the 'MIL-STD 810G' standard.
For example, the panel's exterior was sprayed with water and frozen into a 6mm thick layer of ice at minus 10 degrees Celsius, maintained in that state for four hours, and then checked for normal operation. The panel also endured two hours each at minus 32 degrees Celsius and 63 degrees Celsius, with this rapid temperature change repeated three times over twelve hours, resulting in no performance issues.
In twenty-six drop tests from a height of 1.22 meters, simulating different directions in which a person might drop a phone, the panel showed no problems. When the product was rotated at a speed applying up to 10.5 times the force of gravity, it was confirmed that the product remained intact even during vigorous external activities.
Jo Yong-seok, Marketing Team Leader of Samsung Display's Small and Medium Business Division, said, "Through this certification, we have confirmed our solid technological superiority in the foldable display market, which has established itself as the next-generation form factor. We expect foldable panels to be utilized in various devices and environments going forward."
Meanwhile, Samsung Display has built leadership in the foldable field based on intellectual property (IP) accumulated over more than ten years since 2012. The company holds about 1,800 patents related to foldable technology (based on U.S. disclosures and registrations), approximately four times more than major global competitors.
