Discussion on Goals and Content of the 2nd AI Safety Summit
The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 16th that it held the first meeting of the 'AI Global Norm Advisory Group' at SpaceAid CBD in Seoul.
The advisory group was formed to prepare the upcoming 'AI Safety Summit' to be held in South Korea this May, together with domestic AI experts, and to reflect the voices of the Korean industry and academia in the process of identifying key discussions and consensus points of the summit.
At the meeting, Park Yoon-kyu, the 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and over 20 experts from industry, academia, and research gathered to share the results of the first summit and discuss the main goals and detailed contents of the second summit. They engaged in in-depth discussions on AI safety evaluation, measures companies should take, and the social risks of high-performance AI.
They also exchanged opinions on proposals for sustainable AI development, including securing global-level AI safety achievable within the domestic AI industry environment and ensuring energy safety to respond to massive power consumption and carbon emissions.
The Ministry of Science and ICT plans to hold face-to-face and video meetings with the advisory group regularly. Through this, they intend to set and specify the goals and agenda of the summit and consult with the co-host country, the United Kingdom, and other participating countries to support the growth of South Korea's AI industry.
Vice Minister Park said, "Hosting this summit will be an opportunity for South Korea to contribute to establishing global AI norms and governance and to safely enjoy the benefits of AI together with the world."
Meanwhile, the first summit was held last November at Bletchley Park in the United Kingdom, where the roles and cooperation measures of governments and the private sector to minimize AI risks were discussed. As a follow-up to the first summit, Professor Joshua Bengio is in charge of preparing the 'Scientific Status Report,' with Professor Lee Kyung-moo of Seoul National University and Professor Oh Hye-yeon of KAIST participating.
