Jongno Takes Initiative to Support Health Insurance Premiums for Vulnerable Groups

Jongno-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jeong Munheon) has been supporting the National Health Insurance premiums, long-term care insurance premiums, and more for vulnerable groups since 2008, striving to improve the health and quality of life of low-income residents.

This year’s beneficiaries include residents aged 65 or older in Jongno-gu who are regional subscribers with a minimum insurance premium of 22,340 KRW or less, registered disabled persons, and single-parent families. Medical aid recipients who already receive medical service benefits are excluded.

Last year, as the minimum insurance premium increased by 35.7% (5,870 KRW) from 16,440 KRW in 2022 to 22,310 KRW in 2023, Jongno-gu invested 81 million KRW of its own budget to support 5,638 low-income households in receiving medical benefits.

This year, with an increased total budget of 125.5 million KRW compared to last year, the district plans to support households in need.

Additionally, to proactively identify medically underserved populations, Jongno-gu requested and obtained a list of about 2,500 households in the district charged below the minimum insurance premium from the National Health Insurance Service. A full survey to verify the living conditions of these households will be conducted by March this year, with efforts to eliminate blind spots.

Applications for health insurance premium support are accepted year-round. Those interested can inquire at their local community service center or the Social Welfare Division’s Livelihood Security Team and submit the required documents.

District Mayor Jeong Munheon stated, “To enable more residents to receive benefits, we revised the related ordinance in July last year to include livelihood benefit recipients in the support targets. We will continue to implement policies that protect the health of vulnerable groups and improve their quality of life to ensure that no one misses out on essential medical services due to financial difficulties.”
