Gyeonggi Office of Education Operates 27 Carbon Neutral Ecological Environment Model Schools

The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education has selected 27 schools as ‘Gyeonggi Carbon Neutral Ecological Environment Model Schools’ to strengthen carbon-neutral ecological environment education.

The Gyeonggi Carbon Neutral Ecological Environment Model Schools is a newly introduced project this year, aimed at creating a model for environmental education curricula through cooperation between local governments and related organizations.

The model schools operate focusing on ▲collaboration among school members ▲diversity in curriculum operation ▲sustainability of community cooperation. Additionally, they establish local environmental education councils to spread the sharing of practical cases within the community.

The Provincial Office of Education plans to support the internal development and capabilities of the model schools by providing programs from various related organizations such as the National Institute of Environmental Preservation, the National Institute of Biological Resources, Korea Electric Power Corporation, and the Gyeonggi Environment and Energy Promotion Agency. Furthermore, through performance sharing meetings and evaluations, the model schools will be expanded, and networks by school level will be established to provide opportunities for mutual growth among schools.

Jo Young-min, Director of the Convergence Education Policy Division at the Provincial Office of Education, stated, "Environmental education starts here and now, where I live," adding, "We will expand existing environmental education into carbon-neutral ecological environment education and establish a Gyeonggi-type model to realize diverse curricula in the community."

Meanwhile, according to the ‘Environmental Education Act’ and the ordinance for promoting carbon-neutral environmental education in response to climate change, the Provincial Office of Education conducts two hours of carbon-neutral environmental education per grade in kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools.
