UNIST Graduation Ceremony: 198 PhDs, 290 Master's, 427 Bachelor's Degrees Awarded

Deoksan Lee Junho Honorary Chairman Receives 'Myungbak'

Professor Choir Group's Surprise Stage for Students

UNIST (President Yong-Hoon Lee) held the 2024 degree conferment ceremony at the indoor gymnasium at 2 p.m. on the 15th.


At the ceremony, a total of 915 degrees were awarded, including 198 doctoral degrees, 290 master's degrees, and 427 bachelor's degrees. Since its establishment in 2009, UNIST has produced a total of 9,409 science and technology talents, including 1,241 doctoral graduates, 2,119 master's graduates, and 6,049 bachelor's graduates.


The event proceeded in the order of congratulatory performances, academic procession, honorary doctorate conferment, academic report, outstanding graduate awards, congratulatory speeches by guests, degree conferment, valedictorian speech, celebratory song, and singing of the school anthem.


In the undergraduate outstanding graduate awards, student Seunghwan Noh (Department of Computer Science) received the UNIST President's Award, Seokjun Lee (Department of Mechanical Engineering) received the Minister of Science and ICT Award, and Hyeongjun Noh (Department of Physics) received the Chairman's Award.


Additionally, Mina Kang (Department of Industrial Engineering) and Bada Lee (Department of Earth Environment and Urban Construction Engineering) received the Ulsan Mayor's Award and Ulju County Governor's Award, respectively. The LS Group Award went to Eunsoo Lee (School of Business and Science) and Junyoung Park (Department of Mechanical Engineering).


The highest honor awarded to outstanding graduate students, the Yebong Award, was given to Ji-yeon Kim from the Department of Chemistry (advisor Won-Young Choi). Kim, who researched functional porous materials, led the publication of five first-author papers in SCI-level journals during the integrated master's and doctoral program. The Yebong Award is funded by a development fund donated by Dr. Moo-Je Cho, a former president of UNIST. Dr. Cho personally presented the award on this day.


The Outstanding Thesis Award recipients were graduate students Joon-kyu Choi (Department of Materials Science and Engineering, advisor Ji-yoon Kim), Hyun-woo Kim (Department of Life Sciences, advisor Chang-wook Lee), Kyu-min Lee (School of Business and Science, advisor Young-choon Kim), and Jin-wook Yoo (Department of Energy and Chemical Engineering, advisor Sang-il Seok).


An honorary Doctor of Engineering degree was also conferred upon Junho Lee, Honorary Chairman of the Duksan Group.


Vice President Jaeyong Lee said, “Chairman Lee, with the belief in ‘material industry as the foundation of the nation,’ has transformed the local company Duksan Hi-Metal into a global enterprise through bold research and development investments, and his entrepreneurial spirit serves as a model for UNIST faculty and students.”


A surprise stage to celebrate the graduates was also prepared. The faculty vocal ensemble passionately sang “I’m Fine” and “You Raise Me Up,” encouraging the graduates for their new beginnings.


President Yong-Hoon Lee urged the graduates, “To survive the era of great scientific and technological upheaval, I hope you become future talents who can foresee and design the next ten years ahead.”


The degree conferment ceremony was attended by Jaeho Song, Chairman of the UNIST Board, Hyodae Ahn, Deputy Mayor of Ulsan Economic Affairs, Sung-geol Lee, Ulju County Governor, Dongseop Kim, President of Korea National Oil Corporation, Jonghoon Kim, Ulsan City Council member, Chaeil Lim, President of Ulsan Jeil Ilbo, and Suhun Lee, Chairman of the Duksan Group.
