POSCO E&C announced on the 14th that it obtained approval last month for its short-term carbon reduction targets for 2030 from the global carbon neutrality initiative SBTi (Science Based Targets initiative).
SBTi is a global initiative that verifies companies' carbon emission reduction targets based on scientific evidence. It sets emission reduction goals in accordance with the Paris Agreement and leads campaigns to limit the average temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Through joining SBTi, POSCO E&C has established specific goals including ▲expansion of renewable energy projects ▲energy efficiency improvements at sites and buildings ▲carbon reduction and support in the supply chain Scope 3 ▲carbon reduction during the building operation phase according to the zero-energy building roadmap.
These targets cover direct greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1) and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 2) generated during the construction process, as well as greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 3) across the entire value chain, including the use phase of sold products.
Following SBTi approval, POSCO E&C plans to promote carbon reduction in Scopes 1 and 2 by implementing low-carbon sites and renewable energy projects such as offshore wind power. For Scope 3, it will accelerate the development of eco-friendly construction technologies according to the zero-energy building roadmap and promote value chain carbon reduction through systematic supply chain management, including the expansion of low-carbon materials.
A POSCO E&C official stated, "We are undertaking various activities to reduce carbon emissions throughout the entire construction process, from construction materials to construction, operation, and disposal, in cooperation with employees, partners, and customers," adding, "Through the implementation of our carbon neutrality strategy, we will contribute to building an eco-friendly society and lead the construction industry's response to climate change by expanding low-carbon businesses."
