Revealed at the 2024 WGS Pre-Event
Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), expressed an optimistic outlook on the future global economic situation on the 11th (local time).
Georgieva delivered a speech at a pre-event of the 2024 World Government Summit (WGS), which begins the next day in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), stating, "Although uncertainty remains high, we can be a bit more confident about the world economy's outlook, which has shown remarkable resilience."
The WGS, with the slogan "Shaping Future Governments," has been held annually since 2013 and is now in its 11th edition this year.
Regarding the Gaza Strip war, she said, "Such an unprecedented uncertain situation worsens the difficulties of economies still recovering from previous shocks," and expressed concern that "if the conflict spreads amid reduced Red Sea logistics and increased transportation costs, the economic damage will be even greater."
She noted that if governments in the Middle East directly eliminate or reduce energy subsidies, they could save $336 billion (approximately 448 trillion won), adding, "Removing energy subsidies also helps reduce pollution and improve social spending."
Meanwhile, the WGS was launched through cooperation between the UAE government and the private sector to discuss the changing roles, efficient functions, innovation, technology, and intergovernmental cooperation of next-generation governments, aiming to address imminent global challenges and seek a better future for humanity.
This year’s event invited 25 top-level officials, including Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, and Recep Tayyip Erdo?an, President of T?rkiye, as well as over 300 ministerial-level participants from various governments and international organizations.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, will also attend to hold a dialogue on the future of artificial intelligence (AI).
