Earthquakes occurred in Hawaii and Southern California.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that at 10:05 a.m. local time on the 9th, a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck just south of Big Island, Hawaii.
The epicenter was located at 19.188 degrees north latitude and 155.509 degrees west longitude, with a focal depth of 22.9 miles (36.8 km).
According to the Associated Press, the earthquake occurred 11 miles (18 km) south of Naalehu, the southernmost point of Hawaii.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center did not issue a tsunami warning related to this earthquake. However, strong shaking was reported in various locations.
Later, at around 1:47 p.m., a magnitude 4.6 earthquake occurred off the coast of Malibu, a city in Southern California.
The earthquake struck near the Santa Monica Mountains, approximately 35 miles (56 km) west of downtown Los Angeles (LA). This earthquake was also felt southward toward Orange County and eastward into downtown LA from the Malibu coast.
LA fire authorities reported no immediate damage but stated that the earthquake was "felt widely."
