On the 8th, the Bank of Korea announced that the Financial Services Commission Chairman recommended Hwang Geon-il, former Executive Director of the World Bank (WB), as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee.


The Bank of Korea stated, "The Financial Services Commission Chairman has recommended Hwang Geon-il, former Executive Director of the World Bank, as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee, which is currently vacant," and added, "The aforementioned candidate for the Monetary Policy Committee member will be appointed after undergoing the prescribed procedures."


Earlier, in December, former Monetary Policy Committee member Park Chun-seop moved to the Blue House as the Senior Secretary for Economic Affairs, creating a vacancy in the committee.


Born in 1961, Hwang graduated from Daedong High School in Busan and earned a degree in Economics from Yonsei University. He then completed a master's degree in Public Administration at Seoul National University Graduate School of Public Administration and a master's degree in Economics at the University of Oregon in the United States, starting his public service career by passing the 31st Administrative Examination.


He served as Director General of the International Finance Bureau and Deputy Minister for International Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Strategy and Finance. From November 2018 to October 2020, he was the Executive Director representing 15 countries including Korea and Australia at the World Bank.
