Global Warming Accelerates... "Temperature Rise Exceeds 1.5 Degrees for the First Time"

Temperature Rises 1.52 Degrees Compared to Pre-Industrial Levels in the Past Year

Observations have indicated that the global average temperature rise over the past year has exceeded the international community's target of 1.5 degrees Celsius (compared to pre-industrial levels).

On the 8th (local time), the British BBC cited data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the European Union (EU) climate change monitoring agency, reporting this. According to the data, the global average temperature rise from February last year to January this year was 1.52 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels. In 2015, 195 countries worldwide set a goal at the Paris Climate Change Agreement (COP21) to keep the global average temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to pre-industrial levels.

Research results also show that the point at which the temperature rise surpasses 1.5 degrees is being brought forward as global warming intensifies. The U.S. climate analysis group Berkeley Earth estimated last year that the increase had already exceeded 1.5 degrees. However, agencies such as NASA report that the rise over the past year was lower than 1.5 degrees.

BBC reported, "This difference mainly stems from the methods used to estimate Earth's temperature in the late 1800s," but added, "All major data agree on the recent warming trajectory." This suggests that warming may continue for a longer period. It also reported, "Last year, accelerated warming caused the global average temperature and the average sea surface temperature worldwide to reach record highs."

Experts have pointed out the need to take action to prevent further warming. Professor Liz Bentley, president of the Royal Meteorological Society in the UK, said, "Exceeding 1.5 degrees is a serious problem and another step in the wrong direction," but added, "However, we know what needs to be done (to prevent warming)." Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service, also stated, "Rapidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions is the only way to stop the rise in Earth's temperature."
