IT Media "Mass Production in 2026"
Display and Battery Choices Under Consideration
Apple is reportedly developing a 'foldable iPhone' similar to Samsung Electronics' Galaxy Z Flip.
IT media outlet The Information reported on the 7th (local time), citing sources, that Apple is developing a clamshell-shaped prototype that opens and closes like a shell.
The source stated that Apple is developing at least two types of prototypes and has discussed parts procurement with one or more manufacturers in Asia.
The source explained that Apple is trying to develop a 'folding' iPhone with a display on the outside of the device and as thin as the current iPhone, but is facing design difficulties because it can easily break and it is difficult to apply a small battery.
Apple reportedly obtained a patent for a 'folding' device in February last year, drawing attention to whether it will be applied to the iPhone and other devices. Experts expect Apple to apply the 'folding' method to the iPad before the iPhone.
However, The Information forecasted that the mass production plan for the foldable iPhone is still undecided and is expected to be no earlier than 2026. This is seven years after Samsung Electronics released the Galaxy Fold in 2019.
Along with this, the media reported that Apple is still developing a foldable iPad.
Apple is developing a foldable tablet with an 8-inch (20.3 cm) display size, almost the same size as the iPad mini. Apple is developing technology to reduce the crease that appears in the middle of the foldable iPad's display and to make the display as flat as possible when unfolded.
The release schedule for the foldable iPad has not been announced, but experts expect it to hit the market before the foldable iPhone.
