Opening of Gwangjin Global Family Center

Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) held the opening ceremony of the Gwangjin Global Family Center on the 7th and began full-scale operations.

The center was established as a communication channel to support the growth and independence of multicultural families by sharing information and culture, and to facilitate natural exchanges with local residents.

Jayang-dong is an area where many foreigners and multicultural residents live due to Konkuk University, Sejong University, and the Yangkkochi Street. According to the 2023 statistics from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, there are 4,048 multicultural residents living in Gwangjin-gu. Among them, 1,111 are marriage immigrants, 1,724 are naturalized citizens, and 1,213 are children of multicultural families.

Since the 8th term of the elected government, it was determined that a sanctuary where multicultural families can rest comfortably was needed. Since 2022, efforts have been made in various ways, including planning for the use of public facilities, installation plans, and budget allocation, leading to the opening of the center this time.

The Gwangjin Global Family Center is located on the first floor of the Jaiela building near Konkuk University Station (87 Neungdong-ro). The interior was designed to suit a family center and furnished accordingly. The area is 118㎡, approximately 36 pyeong. It was designed by dividing the space into educational, resting, and office areas, creating a shelter for multicultural families and residents.

The center operates from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and is open for anyone to rest comfortably. The center will serve as a place for ▲ talent donation activities such as cultural understanding education and foreign language education ▲ self-help group activities providing mutual cultural exchange ▲ and a communication and resting space for residents and multicultural families.

The opening ceremony was held with about 50 attendees, including key guests, multicultural families, and residents. The atmosphere was elevated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and musical performances by multicultural families. The ceremony proceeded smoothly with reports on the center’s development, introduction of center projects, congratulatory speeches, and facility tours. Notably, there was an opportunity to experience virtual reality (VR) world travel and meditation for mental and physical relaxation through VR devices, attracting attention. Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “I thank all those involved who worked hard to establish the Gwangjin Global Family Center. I hope multicultural families and residents will make full use of it,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to create a happy Gwangjin-gu where multicultural families and local residents come together.”
