O Eonseok, Dobong-gu Mayor, Traditional Market Visit for Lunar New Year Welfare Walk

Oh Eon-seok, the mayor of Dobong-gu, visited six local traditional markets and one shopping district ahead of the major Korean holiday Seollal to meet with merchants and residents and address their livelihoods.

This visit by Mayor Oh was initiated to encourage merchants facing difficulties due to steep price increases and high interest rates causing reduced consumer sentiment, and to conduct a ‘Fire Prevention Safety Culture Campaign’ with residents in response to a recent fire incident at a traditional market.

On the 5th, he visited ▲Changdong Sinchang Market ▲Changdong Alley Market ▲Ssangmun Market ▲Ssangmun Station Surrounding Shopping District, and on the 6th, he visited ▲Baegun Market ▲Banghak-dong Dokkaebi Market ▲Sindobong Market.

Mayor Oh purchased various foods such as rice cakes, fruits, and vegetables using Onnuri gift certificates and exchanged well-wishes and holiday greetings with residents who came to shop. He also toured the markets to listen to the merchants’ difficulties.

He then conducted the ‘Fire Prevention Safety Culture Campaign’ together with the Safety Culture Movement Promotion Council, Dobong Fire Station, and the Autonomous Disaster Prevention Group. They distributed leaflets detailing fire prevention methods and reporting procedures and informed about the proper use of heating devices during winter.

Additionally, Mayor Oh checked the atmosphere at traditional markets where the stall improvement project had been completed. Last year, the district carried out stall improvement projects at Changdong Sinchang Market and Changdong Alley Market. Currently, the stalls at four traditional markets in Dobong-gu, including these two, have been improved.

One resident commented on the new stall designs, which are ▲easy to see, ▲easy to select from, and ▲easy to understand, saying, “Above all, it’s good that the hygiene has improved. The clean environment has broken my preconceived notions about traditional markets.”

As part of the stall improvement project, the district is also striving to enhance payment convenience for customers. Merchants have been asked to cooperate in enabling various payment methods such as Zero Pay, Seoul Pay, and Onnuri gift certificates in addition to the existing cash payments, and electronic payment information boards displaying this information are being installed throughout the markets.

Oh Eon-seok, mayor of Dobong-gu, said, “The district is implementing various policies to revitalize traditional markets,” and added, “We will continue to reflect residents’ opinions to improve traditional markets that satisfy customers.”
