Gangbuk-gu, Systematic Development of Specialized Streets to Revitalize Local Commercial Areas

Gangbuk-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is promoting the ‘2024 Specialized Street Support Project’ to systematically foster specialized commercial districts and revitalize local businesses.

The district has established a detailed support system by designating essential projects among the annual key support items to ensure the continuous development of specialized commercial districts. Existing specialized districts will focus on strengthening self-sustainability, while new commercial districts will build their unique identities through merchant capacity-building education, activation of merchant organizations, and consulting, thereby enhancing the distinctive characteristics of Gangbuk-gu’s commercial areas.

Additionally, to secure the growth potential of specialized commercial districts themselves, support will be provided to encourage participation in various public contest projects, laying the foundation for sustainable growth.

In particular, the district classifies this project into ▲‘Humanware’ such as merchant capacity-building education and visits to excellent commercial districts ▲‘Software’ such as establishing commercial district BI and joint marketing operations ▲‘Hardware’ such as public facility environment improvement projects that reflect the characteristics of the commercial districts. It will also focus on installing safety equipment like fire alarms and supporting fire insurance to prevent safety accidents in each commercial district.

Applications can be made if there are 20 or more stores of the same type in a certain area or 40 or more clustered stores, and if autonomous organizations such as prosperity associations or merchant associations are formed within the commercial district.

The application period is until March 15. To apply, download the form from the Gangbuk-gu website under ‘About Our District’ → ‘Notices and Announcements,’ fill it out, and submit it by visit, email, or mail. For inquiries, contact the Regional Economy Division’s Commercial District Revitalization Team.

The district plans to hold a ‘Visiting Project Briefing Session’ within this month to help merchant associations understand the project smoothly and assist with applications.

Lee Soon-hee, Mayor of Gangbuk-gu, said, “We will create various specialized streets to establish Gangbuk-gu as a popular destination for many citizens,” and added, “We hope for active participation from merchants to revitalize the local commercial districts.”
