The research team at the Korean Quantum Energy Research Institute, which claims to have developed a superconductor, is scheduled to present their research results in the United States next month. Meanwhile, the stock price of Sinseong Delta Tech, considered a related theme stock, is showing a rise of over 10% as of the morning of the 5th.
As of 10:49 a.m. on this day, Sinseong Delta Tech is trading at 95,500 won, up 9,200 won (10.66%) compared to the previous trading day. Although it showed an intraday increase of 15.76%, it has currently given up some of the gains.
Sinseong Delta Tech, established in November 1987, is a company specializing in injection molding and pressing that produces plastic parts used in washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, and air purifiers. Its subsidiary, L&S Venture Capital, holds shares in the Quantum Energy Research Institute, which last year claimed to have developed the world's first room-temperature and ambient-pressure superconductor, LK-99. Superconductivity refers to a state where electrical resistance becomes zero. When electrical resistance disappears, electricity can be transmitted without energy loss, potentially causing a revolutionary change in energy utilization.
Regarding this, the mainstream scientific community has largely held the view that LK-99 is not a room-temperature superconductor. In December last year, the Korean Society of Superconductivity and Cryogenics Verification Committee stated, "There is no evidence that it is a room-temperature and ambient-pressure superconductor." The American journal Science listed LK-99 as a failure case of that year.
However, last month, Lee Seok-bae, director of the Quantum Energy Research Institute, asserted, "The material ‘LK-99 (PCPOSOS)’ owned and researched by the Quantum Energy Research Institute, which has unique superconducting properties, is indeed a superconductor," adding, "Instead of LK-99, we developed a material called 'PCPOSOS' by adding sulfur, and confirmed that its resistance shows superconducting characteristics." He also introduced that Professor Kim Hyun-tak from William & Mary University in the United States, who is conducting joint research, plans to present at a conference in March. However, verification data was not disclosed due to issues such as patents.
Stocks related to superconductors have repeatedly surged and plunged whenever research results related to LK-99 were reported. The securities and financial sectors point out that investing in superconductor theme stocks without analyzing corporate value is risky. Financial authorities warned last year, when superconductor theme stocks were volatile, that it could "encourage 'debt investment' (borrowing to invest)." Sinseong Delta Tech also closed up 16.31% compared to the previous trading day on the 2nd.
