Gangdong-gu Installs Fences on Children's School Routes, Significantly Reducing Accident Risks

Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 5th that it has completed the installation and maintenance of pedestrian protective fences (a total of 1,376m) at 20 locations including children protection zones and elementary school commuting routes to ensure children's pedestrian safety.

Pedestrian protective fences are facilities designed to prevent pedestrian accidents occurring on roads. They are especially installed in children protection zones or areas with many pedestrians to prevent jaywalking and allow pedestrians to cross the road safely.

Last year, the district newly installed pedestrian protective fences at 11 locations including Myeongdeok Elementary School, Gangmyeong Elementary School, and Sinmyeong Elementary School, where there were no fences, and extended the fences at 8 locations including Cheonil Elementary School and Gomyung Elementary School.

Additionally, maintenance was completed on the pedestrian protective fence at one aged location, Cheonho Elementary School.

This year, the district plans to conduct on-site inspections targeting children protection zones and elementary school commuting routes, and will consider additional maintenance or new installations where pedestrian protective fences are aged or pose risks, while continuing consultations with Seoul City and related agencies.

Jung Young-hwan, head of the Traffic Administration Division, said, “We will continue to carefully monitor and ensure the thorough expansion of traffic safety facilities that protect children's safe walking.”
