‘Seolmaji Seocho Direct Market’ Ready for Budget-Friendly Lunar New Year Preparations

Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) will hold the "Seolmaji Seocho Direct Transaction Market" for two days from the 6th to the 7th at the district office plaza and nearby Music Walkway to celebrate the traditional Korean Lunar New Year holiday, Seollal.

Starting in 2003, the "Seocho Direct Transaction Market," now in its 22nd year, has provided residents with the opportunity to purchase excellent local specialties at affordable prices, while offering participating farms and neighborhood shops a chance to expand their sales channels and increase revenue, earning great love from both consumers and sellers.

Last year, the district held a total of 18 markets, selling high-quality agricultural, marine, and livestock products as well as local specialties from across the country, along with various events such as performances by young artists and special sales of seasonal fruits, receiving positive responses.

This year’s "Seolmaji Seocho Direct Transaction Market" will feature participation from over 50 farms from 23 sister local governments, local agricultural cooperatives including Nam Seoul Nonghyup and Yeongdong Nonghyup, and the Maljukgeori Shopping Street, Seocho-gu’s first alley-type shopping district located in Yangjae-dong.

Main items for sale include ▲Mosip leaf salted seafood and roasted seaweed from Seocheon-gun ▲Hangwa (traditional Korean sweets) and apples from Yesan-gun ▲Korean beef and pork from Cheongyang-gun ▲Dangjin bugak (fried snack) ▲Organic eggs and kimchi from Goesan-gun ▲Cheonggukjang (fermented soybean paste) and seasonal vegetables from Goryeong-gun ▲Garlic and grapes from Uiseong-gun ▲Honey and mushrooms from Sancheong-gun ▲Onions and peanuts from Taean-gun, all fresh local specialties ▲Black soybeans and shiitake mushrooms from Hoengseong-gun ▲Gangjeong (traditional sweets) and grains from Nam Seoul Nonghyup ▲Food products and leafy vegetables from Yeongdong Nonghyup ▲Fruits and rice cakes from Maljukgeori Shopping Street, totaling about 200 items.

Especially for the Seollal market, high-quality holiday ritual foods such as dried yellow croaker, hangwa, apples, and dried persimmons will be sold at prices lower than market rates, helping to ease residents’ holiday shopping expenses.

The market will operate from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The district plans to run the "Seocho Direct Transaction Market" twice a month on the second and fourth Thursday and Friday, excluding the coldest and hottest seasons, throughout the year, and will activate the market further by organizing various promotional events.

Jeon Seong-su, Mayor of Seocho-gu, said, "I hope residents will purchase high-quality products at affordable prices at this Seolmaji Direct Transaction Market and enjoy a bountiful Lunar New Year holiday. We will continue to strive to stabilize residents’ shopping costs and promote a win-win market for urban and rural communities by expanding sales channels for farms."
