The prosecution has requested a one-year prison sentence for actor Oh Young-soo (79), who became famous for his role as the "Kkanbu" grandfather in the Netflix drama "Squid Game."
At the sentencing hearing held on the 2nd at the Suwon District Court Seongnam Branch, presided over by Judge Jeong Yeon-ju of Criminal Division 6, the prosecution requested a one-year prison term for Oh, who was indicted on charges of sexual assault, along with employment restrictions and disclosure of personal information.
The prosecution stated, "In 2017, at a drinking party where the victims were present, the defendant expressed a distorted longing for youth by saying 'You look like women,' and although he sent an apology text at the victim's request, he evaded responsibility by saying 'Because you are like my daughter,' causing the victim to feel frustrated."
They further requested the court to impose a severe punishment on the defendant, who has shown no remorse during the investigation and trial process.
In his final statement, Oh said, "It is very difficult and painful to stand in court at this age. Seeing my life end in such a situation is devastating, and it feels like my entire life is collapsing," adding, "I hope for a wise judgment."
Oh's defense attorney appealed for leniency, stating, "Apart from the victim's testimony and the evidence derived from it, there is very little evidence consistent with this case. Considering the location, circumstances, and time of the alleged assault, there is doubt whether the defendant could have committed the crime."
Earlier that day, the prosecution and defense conducted a closed defendant interrogation of Oh.
Oh is accused of forcibly assaulting victim A twice in 2017 while staying in a certain province for about two months for a theater performance that summer: hugging her on a walking trail in August and kissing her cheek in front of her residence in September.
Oh has denied the allegations in court, stating that he did not commit the assault.
The sentencing hearing for Oh will be held on the 15th of next month.
Oh, who appeared in Squid Game, became the first Korean actor to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV category in the United States in January 2022.
