Ministry of Science and ICT Meets Samsung to Discuss Household Burden Relief and 28GHz Device Launch

Park Yoon-kyu, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT (pictured), met with Jung Ho-jin, Vice President of Samsung Electronics, to discuss easing the burden of device prices and the launch of devices supporting the 5G 28 GHz frequency band.

The meeting took place on the 2nd at Samsung Electronics' Seocho building. Vice Minister Park shared the purpose and future plans for the abolition of the so-called 'Dantong Law (Act on the Improvement of Distribution Structure of Mobile Communication Devices),' which is being promoted to reduce household communication expenses.

He also requested cooperation to expand competition in device subsidies and activate the launch of mid- to low-priced devices even before the law is amended, so that the burden on the public can be alleviated.

In this regard, LG Uplus aligned with the government’s policy by expanding the official subsidy for Samsung Electronics' new smartphone Galaxy S24 series up to 450,000 KRW on the same day.

They also shared the results of the 5G mobile communication 28 GHz frequency band auction completed the day before. Stage Five was selected as the new operator to use the 28 GHz frequency, and cooperation was requested to help the operator settle early in the market by launching dedicated devices supporting 28 GHz.

This is because combining the core strengths of 5G communication?ultra-high speed and ultra-connectivity?with Samsung devices can create synergy by providing various artificial intelligence (AI) services.

Vice Minister Park stated, "This year, we are accelerating various policies to revitalize competition in the mobile communication market and reduce the burden of household communication expenses," adding, "We agreed that manufacturers will also strengthen cooperation, such as expanding the launch of mid- to low-priced devices."
