On February 1st at 2 PM local time, Oh Seung-rok, the mayor of Nowon-gu, signed an agreement for carbon neutrality policy cooperation at Utrecht City Hall in the Netherlands.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was held to build consensus between the two institutions aiming to enhance cooperation in the field of carbon neutrality. Attendees included Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, the Carbon Neutrality Promotion Team, officials from Utrecht City Hall’s spatial planning department, and Utrecht’s Deputy Mayor Lot van Hooijdonk.
The MOU includes discovering and sharing excellent carbon neutrality policies, supporting the exchange of policy trends, and exchanging professional personnel and physical resources to implement carbon neutrality policies.
Utrecht is the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, with a population of approximately 360,000. Notably, it was selected as the world’s most bicycle-friendly city in 2022, reflecting its well-established bicycle-friendly policies, and it is striving to establish a transportation system that does not emit carbon dioxide.
Additionally, Utrecht is one of the 100 cities selected by the European Commission for the ‘Climate Neutral and Smart City Transition,’ actively responding to the climate crisis including carbon neutrality.
Nowon-gu expects this agreement and benchmarking of sustainable policies such as Utrecht’s public transportation-centered policies to be a valuable opportunity to incorporate into Nowon-gu’s carbon-neutral city creation policies.
Oh Seung-rok, mayor of Nowon-gu, stated, “Starting with the agreement for carbon neutrality policy cooperation with Utrecht, we will actively work together with the residents of Nowon-gu to make Nowon-gu a global model for urban carbon neutrality.”
