Visit Local Markets to Encourage Merchants
The nation's biggest holiday, Seollal, is just over 10 days away.
Accordingly, district mayors in Seoul are visiting markets to create an atmosphere where residents can prepare traditional Seollal offerings at local traditional markets.
On January 31, Ryu Gyeong-gi, mayor of Jungnang District, visited Woorim Market to communicate with merchants and market users, listen to the merchants' difficulties, and offer encouragement.
Traditional markets in Jungnang District have prepared abundant events for the Seollal holiday. Until the 8th, customers purchasing offerings and other items at traditional markets and shopping streets in Jungnang District will receive Onnuri gift certificates worth up to 10,000 won or gifts depending on the purchase amount.
This traditional market event was organized to reduce the burden of holiday table preparations for residents and to revitalize traditional markets. The events will be held sequentially at a total of eight locations: seven traditional markets including Woorim, Dongwon, Dongwon Shopping Street, Myeonmok, Sagajeong, Dongbu, Jangmi Jeil, and one alley-type shopping street, Taeneung.
Mayor Ryu said, “I hope residents visit traditional markets full of generous hospitality to reduce their cost burden and enjoy the event benefits, having a rich Seollal holiday. We will continue to strive to revitalize the local economy, including traditional markets.”
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin District (second from the left), is visiting a clothing store and greeting the merchants.
On the 1st, Kim Gyeong-ho, mayor of Gwangjin District, along with about 30 staff members, visited Myeongok Alley Market in Junggok-dong to shop and prepare for the upcoming Seollal holiday. Carrying shopping bags, they toured the market purchasing cost-effective offerings and groceries.
Mayor Kim greeted merchants and listened to their voices on whether they were facing any difficulties in management. He also participated in a rice cake pounding experience, wishing for blessings to come to the traditional market. With a vigorous shout, he continued communication, saying, “We will strive to make the traditional market always lively and bustling.”
The district is conducting a ‘Holiday Shopping’ event from the 1st to the 7th to revitalize traditional markets in celebration of the nation’s major holiday, Seollal.
The ‘Holiday Shopping’ event, involving Gwangjin District staff, was organized to inject vitality into traditional markets struggling due to the economic downturn. Staff visit markets in a voluntary atmosphere to encourage and support merchants.
‘Holiday Shopping’ takes place at all markets in Gwangjin District. In addition to Myeongok Alley Market, visitors are welcomed at Junggok Jeil Market, Yeongdonggyo Market, Neungdong-ro Market, Norunsan Market, Jayang Traditional Market, Sinseong Traditional Market, and Hwayang Jeil Market.
Various events for purchasing customers have also been prepared. Customers who purchase over a certain amount can receive Onnuri gift certificates or gifts such as cooking oil, seaweed, and socks.
Mayor Kim Gyeong-ho of Gwangjin District said, “With the rising costs of holiday tables due to high prices, I hope residents can reduce their burden by shopping at traditional markets filled with generous hospitality. Various experiential events are also prepared, so I ask for your great interest.”
