On the 2nd, Mayor Lee Kang-deok visited the Regional Medical Innovation Center of Seoul National University College of Medicine (Director Kang Dae-hee), established for national balanced development and regional medical innovation, to discuss the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School and plans to foster the Pohang bio-industry.
This visit was arranged to discuss the serious medical disparities between regions caused by the concentration of medical resources in the metropolitan area with Professor Kang Dae-hee, who is working hard for regional medical innovation, as the government's essential medical policy package announcement and the expansion of medical school quotas accelerate, and to cooperate on the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School and the development of a bio-specialized complex.
The Regional Medical Innovation Center of Seoul National University College of Medicine, under the Health and Social Development Institute, opened in September last year, is dedicated to regional medical innovation through research and seminars on regional healthcare and bio-health, industry-academia-research cooperation, and policy research and development in areas such as medical disparities between regions, healthcare infrastructure, and bio-healthcare.
Professor Kang Dae-hee, the inaugural director, emphasized the urgent need to prevent the collapse of local medical services and realize a regional era through the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School and the development of a bio-specialized complex, as the rapid transition to a super-aged society is causing local extinction to emerge as a national crisis. He also agreed on the necessity of establishing the POSTECH Medical School to prevent the collapse of medical services in the Gyeongbuk region.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “Last year, we consolidated the citizens' wishes and determination through a city-wide resolution rally and signature campaign for the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School, creating momentum for promotion within the region.” He added, “This year, if there is even a 1% chance related to the expansion of medical school quotas and the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School, I will meet anyone and move forward without hesitation.”
He also stated, “I believe this is the last chance to prevent the collapse of medical services in our region and, furthermore, to stop local extinction, so I will devote myself to the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School.”
On the 17th of last month, Mayor Lee Kang-deok also visited the Korea Pharmaceutical and Bio-Pharma Manufacturers Association (Chairman Noh Yeon-hong) and Kangstem Biotech (Founder Kang Kyung-sun) consecutively to discuss matters related to fostering the bio-industry and requested much interest and cooperation for the establishment of the POSTECH Medical School to improve the underdeveloped local medical environment and enhance the quality of life for citizens.
