Hungary Withdraws Last-Minute Opposition
The 27 member countries of the European Union (EU) agreed on June 1 (local time) to a long-term support plan for Ukraine worth 50 billion euros (approximately 72 trillion won).
Charles Michel, President of the EU Council, announced via X (formerly Twitter) immediately after opening a special summit in Brussels, Belgium, that "all 27 leaders agreed to provide an additional 50 billion euros to Ukraine within the EU budget."
President Michel added, "This agreement ensures steady, long-term, and predictable funding for Ukraine."
The specific details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
Considering the explanation that all 27 countries agreed, it is interpreted that Hungary withdrew its opposition during last-minute negotiations held before the meeting started. Hungary had previously opposed EU-level support for Ukraine. In response, the EU had considered permanently suspending EU fund support to Hungary.
In this regard, President Michel also shared a photo taken before entering the meeting room that morning, showing him in separate negotiations with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orb?n, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
