Gijang-gun Offers Additional Incentives... Busan's First District to Encourage Voluntary Surrender of Senior Driver's Licenses

Busan Gijang-gun (Governor Jeong Jong-bok) will provide traditional market gift certificates (Onnuri gift certificates) worth 100,000 KRW to elderly residents aged 65 and over who voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses starting from February to prevent traffic accidents involving the elderly.

This initiative is separate from Busan City's incentive program for voluntary driver's license surrenderers (providing one prepaid transportation card worth 100,000 KRW per person) and is the first project of its kind to be implemented by a district or county within Busan City.

In October last year, the county partially amended the "Ordinance on Traffic Safety in Gijang-gun, Busan Metropolitan City" to establish a legal basis for providing incentives such as transportation expenses to those who voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses. After completing preparatory procedures, the county will begin accepting applications in earnest from February 1.

The eligible applicants are elderly residents aged 65 and over with an address in Gijang-gun. The applicant or their representative must visit the local eup/myeon administrative welfare center to apply. License surrender and application for support can be done simultaneously during the visit, and once surrendered, the license cannot be withdrawn. Additionally, the program may end early if the budget is exhausted.

A Gijang-gun official stated, "We will actively encourage elderly residents to surrender their driver's licenses to prevent traffic accidents involving the elderly in advance," and added, "We ask for the active participation of all eligible residents."
