Daegu Labor Office, On-site Visit Guidance
Construction work resumed on the 1st at the Taeyoung Construction site in Dong-gu, Daegu, where work had been halted on the 15th of last month due to unpaid wages by subcontractors. Taeyoung Construction fully settled over 1.1 billion KRW in wages for approximately 390 workers on the 31st of last month.
The Daegu Employment and Labor Office announced, “Director Kim Gyuseok personally visited the site on the 24th of last month to guide the primary contractor to promptly settle the unpaid wages. Additionally, subcontractors responsible for the wage arrears were informed about the wage arrears employer loan system to facilitate the settlement of unpaid wages.”
Furthermore, Taeyoung Construction’s headquarters was urged to settle the unpaid wages early, and the client was requested, according to the Framework Act on the Construction Industry, to directly pay subcontractors to ensure the early settlement of unpaid wages.
The Daegu Employment and Labor Office has been operating a “Focused Guidance Period for Prevention and Settlement of Wage Arrears” for four weeks from the 15th of last month to the 8th of this month to ensure a holiday season free of wage arrears. During this period, labor inspectors have directly visited 47 construction sites to guide the timely execution of progress payments.
Additionally, for the 10 construction sites currently being built by Taeyoung Construction, which is facing a liquidity crisis, the office is inspecting for wage arrears and will continuously monitor the execution of progress payments to focus on preventing and settling wage arrears for subcontractor workers.
Malicious employers who conceal assets or misuse funds for personal purposes will be subject to active consideration of detention and investigation. If there is substantial evidence of wage arrears and the employer refuses to appear without justifiable reason, an arrest warrant will be promptly requested, and strict measures will be taken.
Kim Gyuseok, Director of the Daegu Employment and Labor Office, stated, “We will strengthen preventive inspections of vulnerable workplaces where wage arrears are possible so that workers can enjoy a warm holiday season with their families, and we will do our utmost to support their livelihood stability.”
