The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that it will support 90.3 billion KRW in research and development (R&D) in the display sector in 2024, an increase of 17.7% compared to the previous year (76.7 billion KRW). Approximately 45 billion KRW of this will be invested in new projects, focusing on challenging tasks such as developing world-class organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology and next-generation microLED technology.
In the OLED field, about 23.9 billion KRW will be invested in developing ultra-high brightness panel technology, ultra-high resolution micro OLED technology, and high-lifespan emission structures and materials specialized for OLEDs used in IT devices such as tablets.
In the micro LED sector, which uses inorganic light-emitting sources with advantages in brightness and lifespan, 20.2 billion KRW will be supported separately from the ongoing preliminary feasibility study project for manufacturing 40-micrometer (㎛) class LED pixel technology and related areas.
Additionally, 0.9 billion KRW will be allocated for extended reality (XR) related technology development, and continuous projects (45.3 billion KRW) such as demonstration projects to pioneer new display markets including transparent and flexible displays will be continuously managed to ensure excellent outcomes.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to announce the first call for new support projects within this month.
